HARRIET K. DAWSON

THE CHIME LADY

Harriet retired after working many years as an elementary school teacher in Minnesota.  She moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2003.  While scanning a local paper looking for an activity which would give her an opportunity to meet others as well as share her love of music, she noticed an ad asking for volunteers to join a newly established community handbell group.   This was a new experience and Harriet quickly developed a love for playing the bells.   The group soon acquired a set of choirchimes which produced a very soothing, mellow tone.

Early 2008 afforded Ms. Dawson opportunities to attend workshops and concerts in Florida with several well-known handbell groups and soloists.  This was just the catalyst needed for Harriet to purchase her own set of Malmark Choirchimes and set off on a new venture – solo ringing.  She had entertained in nursing home settings in the past so this seemed to be an ideal place to begin.  The music was well received and a new passion was born.

Harriet has worked closely with her mentor, Chimesoloist Betty J. Price , who has honed her skills for 20 years playing nationally and internationally.  Harriet credits her skills to Ms. Price who graciously shares her time, talent and knowledge.  The two have performed together playing their own solos as well as several duets at several venues in the Los Angeles, CA area as well as Mexico.

Harriet is currently enjoying the challenge of playing handbells with the Gulf Coast Ringers under the direction of Jeanne Jessup,    Ms. Jessup’s expertise includes playing with Distinctly Bronze, an AGAHR organization and the group has more than 200 years playing experience collectively.

Harriet has known friends, acquaintances and loved ones affected by cancer.  In the fall of 2008, She made the decision to dedicate her performances to those affected by the disease.  A portion of donations which groups choose to contribute is shared with the American Cancer Society or Tidewell Hospice
